Duke’s Cigarettes

Caricature wears a beret with red star decoration, red shirt, and white pants. He has dark skin, blush cheeks, exaggerated nose, smiling red lips, missing front teeth, and bare feet in a relaxed pose. His body is mostly covered by the 50 Centimes coin which features the Haitian coat of arms and the phrase “Liberté, égalité, fraternité”, the national motto of France and the Republic of Haiti.

Surrounding this cigarette card are photographs by British explorer Harry Johnston; and photos and illustrations from books published in Port-au-Prince, Paris, Brussels and London.
