Duke’s Cigarettes

Caricature displays very dark skin; short hair; full, red lips; smiling face; flirtatious gaze; and spirited pose. She wears gold earrings, a Victorian-era bonnet, dress and fan. The “1 cent” coin was issued by the American Colonization Society and depicts a freed slave on a shore.

Surrounding this cigarette are photos related to the American Colonization Society and several photos taken by British explorer Harry Johnston.
